Boan Stay = “Ramah” (meaning Friendly)

Since the beginning we arrived till we left all the people at Boan were very kind, helpful and of course friendly.

We come to visit Korea through a project called “Hanya Memberi Tak Harap Kembali (HMTHK)” meaning,  To Give and to Expect Nothing in Return, that was held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary  Art.

The title of this activation model comes from a classic children song about the endlessness of motherly love. For our 10th year anniversary in 2010, ruangrupa translated this “rewardless love” into a marketplace, where artists occupy the stalls, act as sellers and give away their respective artworks to the visiting public. There must be no financial transaction happening in the marketplace, where mass-produced products such as stickers, pins, screen prints, postcards, stencils, posters, calendars, digital files containing images and sounds, pictures, graphic materials, stamps and t-shirts, are given away. Through experiencing the model, the meaning of value and transaction (which normally always been delegated to money) come into question.

Pasar Ilmu or Knowledge Market

This signature model, which has been conducted in many iterations around the globe, takes the simple form of a class. In the class, there is a Headmaster who acts as a conductor of the whole session. When the class starts, the Headmaster will ask everyone in the room to pick a partner to sit down together. After the pairs are set, one should take the role of a teacher by teaching whatever she or he wants to the other, who takes the role of a student. After a while, the Headmaster will give a sign that the roles should be reversed: students then have the chance to teach their former teachers. After a full circle of changing roles happens, a card-certificate will be given and signed by the teachers to their students, stating the subject they have learned. Contact numbers are also given away, fostering further communication between the pair beyond the scope of the class.

Our Time at Boan Stay…

Boan Stay was  a very nice and good place to stay, and the location also in a strategic area. All the staff) are very kind and helpful. Boan Stay also  offers manageble  price case to case based for artists, which  I think that’s very important.

Our Favorite Part of Boan Stay…

The terrace in the rooftop defenately our favorite! Because you can met the other residents in Boan Stay and do some chit chat, also you can have breakfast or lunch together in there.
