“우리에게는 오늘날 ‘신화’의 서술(narration)에 따르는 의식(rituals)의 장면이 부족하다. 이 장면들은 삶과 죽음, 역사, 경이, 희생, 태양과 술, 미래, 그리고 ‘아름다움(beauty)’의 의식을 설명할 수 있는 것들이다. ‘과학’ 역시 하나의 신화일 수 있다. 지식권력, 미래, 주식 시장, 부동산 그리고 통합 화페는 또 다른 신화적 통칭이며, 환경, 보디 빌딩, 인종차별과 민족주의, 인터넷, 경제, 빅데이터 역시 오늘날의 신화들이다.”
“<미래의 의식의 의식(Rituals in Rituals of the Future)>은 현재 진행형의 프로젝트이다. 그 중 완성된 일부분은 2018년 12월 1일 상하이 밍 현대미술관(Ming Contemporary Art Museum)의 개관식에서 발표되었다. 최근 2019년 8월부터 11월까지 아시아 문화 센터에서 연구원으로 수행한 “테세우스의 배(Ship of Theseus)”는 이 연구의 일부분이다. 이는 동아시아의 고대 의식이 오늘날 어떻게 사회의 의식화 된 장면으로 변형되는가? 에 대한 논의를 위해 ‘사라지는 배’의 프레임을 다시 부활시켜 오늘날 사회의 의식화된 장면으로 활용하였다. 나는 이러한 변화를 설명하기 위한 진입점으로 광주의 무각사를 바라본다.”
“We lack a scene of rituals that is in accordance with the narration of the “myth” today. It is a scene that can give an account of life and death, history, wonders, sacrifices, the sun and alcohol, the future, as well as the rituals of “beauty”. “Science” is merely one of the myths; knowledge-power; futures, stock market, real estate, and broad currency are collectively another set of myths; environment; bodybuilding; racism and nationalism; internet economics; big data too are all myths of today.”
“Rituals in Rituals of the Future” is an ongoing project. The part that has been finished is a ceremony that took place on December 1st, 2018 at the exhibition hall of Ming Contemporary Art Museum Shanghai. The research I conducted here as a Research Fellow at the Asian Culture Center during August to November 2019, named “Ship of Theseus”, is part of “Rituals in Rituals of the Future”. Using the framework of a disappearing ship that is reborn to discuss the transformation of ancient rituals in East Asia to ritualized scenes in today’s society, I look at Mugaksa in Gwangju as an entry point to illustrate these changes.
차오 지아싱
상하이를 기반으로 활동하는 큐레이터 겸 작가. 상하이 예술 학교가 설립한 비영리 전시공간 V-ART CENTER에서 2011 년부터 2015 년 동안 큐레이터 겸 메니지먼트 디렉터로 활동하며 신진 예술가들과 함께 50여회 이상의 전시와 프로젝트를 기획하여 상하이의 주요한 예술 공간 중 하나로 부상시켰다. 2017년 부터는 상하이의 웨스트 번드(West Bund) 지구에 위치한 수석 큐레이터로 스타트 뮤지엄(Start Museum)에 합류했다. 연구 활동 및 큐레이팅 프로젝트 <미래의 의식의 의식>은 현재적 관점에서의 ‘의식(rituals)’의 역할을 다루고 있으며 학제간 예술 활동에 다양한 관심을 갖고 있다. 현재는 광주 아시아 문화 센터에서 2019 ACC Residency Fellow 2019를 통해 2019 년 8 월 5 일부터 11 월 5 일까지 방문 연구원으로 활동 중이다. 리서치의 주제는 <미래의 의식의 의식(Rituals in Rituals of the Future)> – 테세우스의 배(Ship of Theseus)이다.
CHAO Jiaxing
Curator and writer based in Shanghai. Between 2011-2015, founded by the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, V ART CENTER, a non-profit space where She served as the curator and managing director and produced over 50 art exhibitions and projects with emerging artists, the institution became one of the most important incubating grounds for the Shanghai art scene. And in 2017, She officially joined the Start Museum as the senior curator, located in the West Bund district in Shanghai. Her current research and curating project“Rituals in the Rituals of Future” is related to cross-disciplinary art practices, the role of rituals in historical and contemporary latitudes. She won the ACC Residency Fellow 2019 of the Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea and work as visiting researcher from August 5th to November 5th, 2019. Her research subject title is“Rituals in the Rituals of Future_Ship of Theseus”.
