Since 2013, Craft promotion team “Sseuim” have been working to look back on the meaning of craft in present-day lives and to suggest more practical handmade tools. This year, we present to you “Craft for Cleaning, Mihwapum” as our third project. We created ‘crafts for cleaning’ to add special value to ordinary labor.

Cleaning is often expressed as “미화”(mihwa, 美化) meaning “to beautify” and is used in various contexts such as ‘environment beautification’(環境 美化)’ or ‘beautifying person’(美化員). But in reality, mihwa is used more as an ironic, negative meaning. The word mihwa made us suspect the hypocritical stance of present-day society has on cleaning.

Since long, cleaning has been the first basic manners taught in both Confucianism and Buddhism, emphasizing it being an essential labor in life. Nevertheless, the social status of ‘cleaning’ is and has always been low. Cleaning is in the shadows of patriarchy or discrimination of trades –a factor still yet to be overcome.

In this project, we propose a new genre of handcrafts for cleaning, mihwapum, and hope to reposition where ‘cleaning’ stands in everyday life. Our goal is to show that using handcrafts in daily life can be a form of art and to shed new light on the relationship between people, objects, and their uses. Re-evaluation is much needed in society’s sense of authority in art and biased perspectives of esthetical subjects. Through mihwapum, we hope cleaning can be redefined as a meaningful process in your life as well as others.
