I truly had an exceptional experience during my time at Boan Stay in the Artspace Boan1942. From the accommodations, gallery spaces, café and the weekly public conversations over tea, Boan presents an incredible experience that is deeply rooted in the local, historical, and cultural context that the old Seoul neighborhood of Seochon has to offer.

Located on the 1st street in Tongui- dong, Tongui-dong Boan Yeokwan (Inn) has always been a “cultural space” and place for artists to stay since the 1930’s and that tradition continues to this day. I especially enjoyed my evenings on the building’s roof terrace with clear views of the traditional Hanok houses, Inwangsan Mountain and of Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House) that is the residence of the President of the Republic of Korea located just at the foot of beautiful Bukaksan Mountain.

From my room window I had a direct view of the west wall of Gyeonbokgung Palace and it’s Yeongchunmun Gate. I learned that this gate represents “The door that brings in fall” or the Autumn Gate and was mainly used for artists and writers to enter the palace. This certainly affords Boan an appropriate and deeper connection to the much earlier history of the area. In fact, during the construction of Boan’s new space, evidence of artifacts and structures from earlier times were uncovered and very well may be the spaces used by the creative individuals and groups waiting entrance into the palace during the Joseon Dynasty. These can all be viewed in situ through Boan’s unique lower basement see-through floor.

I gained a deep appreciation in Boan Stay’s design as a modern iteration of
Boan Inn’s original function as a shelter for cultural producers. Beyond the considerable significance the geographical location holds, the conjunction of profit based space and community space within Artspace Boan1942 is quite unique. Programs such as the weekly Thursday afternoon tea drinking and discussions called Mokcha creates a sense of equity in its openness to anyone to come and share their work unlike the seemingly wall of standards the art world has created.

Another must experience is the café Illsangdabansa, on the first floor of Boan1942. The friendly and creative culinary staff performs behind the common counter while easily integrating customers into the art of consumption and the traditional tea servings should not be missed.

The tradition, spirits and history that remains tangible invites you experience this place – What you will find here is Boan, Seochon and a sense of Korea that is well beyond what the average tourism offers.
