Mehmet Günay Eser is an Traditional Music Researcher and Musician based in Turkey.
메하매트 구낭 에서는 터키의 아나톨리아 반도 남쪽 지중해 연안에는 동서로 길고 높은 목축지, 야일라(yayla)의 목동 음악을 연주하는 뮤지션입니다.
What has brought you to Korea?
I was invited to perform at JeonJu International Sori Festival this year. My first connection to Korea, however, began with meeting Shin Kyoung Hwa and Choi Sung Yul, while they were in Turkey.
Please tell us more about the type of music you perform.
The word “shepards” or the “mountains” describes Yayla Music best. This is because the origin of the music was used to herd the sheeps.
As a contemporary musician who perform one of the oldest form of traditional music in Turkey, I consider myself as bridge to connect the past and present. I seek to preserve and also push the boundaries of the beauty of both past and present musical practice in my work.
How did you come to play this music genre?
Since I was young, I was surrounded by traditional music rather than popular contemporary music. When I attended college, I realized what I was learning as traditional music was not being properly archived and becoming a disappearing form of art. So I began to travel to the counrtry sides and the mountains to learn from the people who still know this music. When I met them, I archived their knowledge and organized performances with them aswell. Currently I have received my master in Music Education. I hope to find new ways to teach traditional music to my students.
If you could choose one word that describe your experience at Boan Stay, what would it be?
It would be “mutluluk”, which means happiness in Turkish Language. The bed, and the linen was very comfortable (haha). I had a wonderful opporutnity to perform last night at Boan Bookstore, which is located in the basement of Boan Stay. Boan Bookstore is quite a beautiful space. As a lover of books myself, I enjoyed performing at a space where both books and music are present. Beyond the space and the historical significance of Artspace Boan1942, I greatly appreciated the wonderful ecelectic audience of friends and colleagues that the space brings together in this place.
한국을 방문하시게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
이번 해 전주세계소리축제에 초대받게 되면서 한국을 방문하게 되었습니다. 일 년 전 신경화, 최성열 PD 를 터키에서 만나고 한국과의 인연이 시작되었습니다.
야일라 음악이란 무엇인가요?
야일라 음악은 함축적으로 한 단어로 표현하자면, 초반 = 목동이라는 뜻입니다. 예로부터 양떼를 몰기 위해서 사용되었던 음악이었기 때문에, 아마 터키에 존재하는 전통음악들보다 가장 오래된, 전통음악 중에서도 전통적인 음악일 수도 있습니다. 양들을 선율에 따라 움직이게 하고, 목동들의 어려움, 고민, 사랑을 담아내기도 하면서, 그들에겐 일상에서 가장 가까운 실용적인 음악, 자연과 가장 가까운 음악, 그리고 자연의 요소들을 반영한, 자연과 가장 가까운 터키 음악 장르입니다.
저는 현시대에 이얄라 음악을 연주하는 뮤지션으로써 전통과 현대를 잇는 다리라고 생각하는데, 본인들은 전통음악의 특징, 미, 현대음악의 특징 미를 가지고 전통의 미를 깨지 않는 선에서 발전시켜보고자 합니다.
야일라음악을 하시게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
어렸을 때부터 대중음악이 아닌 민속 음악을 들었고, 음악학교를 다녔습니다. 대학에 가서 음악을 학문적으로 배우면서 민속 음악과 그 요소들이 많이 변질되고 사라져가고 있는 것을 알게 되어 보존을 해야겠다는 사명감을 가지게 되면서 시골과 산을 돌아다니며 야일라를 연주하는 사람들을 찾아 녹음하고 찍고 악기 연주법을 배웠고, 콘서트 자리를 만들었습니다. 현재는 음악교육학을 전공한 교육학자로 학생들에게 전통음악을 가르치는 방법을 연구 중입니다.
통의동 보안여관의 보안 스테이 에서의 경험을 한 단어로 표현하자면?
터키어로 mutluluk. 행복이라는 뜻입니다. 침구, 이불이 너무 편안했어요 (웃음). 지하 2층 보안책방에서 연주를 했는데, 정말 멋진 공간입니다. 독서를 사랑하는 사람으로서 책으로 가득 차 있는 벽면이 인상적이었고, 책과 음악이 함께 하는 공간에서 연주를 한다는 것이 너무 좋았습니다. 보안여관의 장소도 좋았지만 보안의 위치, 역사적으로 중요한 요인을 한다고 생각하고, 그 무엇보다, 함께 무엇이든 나누며 향유 할 수 있었던 공간에 함께 하며 특별한 추억을 가지고 갑니다.
